Mazda CX-5 – Key Features and Price

The Mazda CX-5 has long held its position as one of the most capable crossover SUVs. From high-quality interiors to sharp performance, the CX-5 delivers it all at a rather competitive price, making it one of Mazda’s best-selling vehicles in the market today. Since its launch, the SUV has won many awards for its versatility, performance, technology, and luxury. If considering buying it, understanding its key features can help one make an informed decision.

Key features

1. Engine and performance

The CX-5 offers buyers two engine choices. The first is a standard 2.5-liter inline-four engine that can produce 187 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque. Those looking to get a little more power can opt for the Turbo variants equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque (with premium fuel). Regardless of the powertrain buyers choose, they can expect a comfortable driving experience thanks to its superior handling, precise steering, and cornering capabilities.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission system with an optional Manual mode. The taut suspension system makes the driving experience smoother, minimizing the impact of potholes and other road imperfections. All trims of the CX-5 also feature Mazda’s standard i-Activ AWD®, which directs torque to the wheels to improve grip and performance in all weather conditions.

2. Fuel economy

The fuel tank in the CX-5 has a capacity of approximately 15.3 gallons. Given the two engine options, the Mazda CX-5 has two available fuel economy ratings. The standard engine option has a rating of 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the Turbo engine offers about 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on highways.

3. Storage and payload

One can expect a decent towing and payload capacity with the CX-5, with the SUV hauling up to 2,000 pounds with ease. The SUV can hold up to nine carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats with a cargo volume of 29.1 cubic feet, a little less than other vehicles in the segment offer. With the rear seats folded down, the cargo volume goes up to 59.3 cubic feet. Thankfully, the SUV has a completely flat load floor, which allows a little extra storage space in the trunk.

4. Interiors

The cabin of the CX-5 has a top-notch layout that is further enhanced with the use of premium materials in the interiors. Its driver-oriented configuration makes the SUV easy to control, giving drivers a lot more confidence in handling the vehicle. The SUV has been engineered with a floor-hinged accelerator pedal instead of the traditional suspended one to offer better grip. The CX-5 also comes with an elevated driving position, tall windows, and narrow pillars to help drivers easily see the road around them and limit their blind spots. That said, because of the sculpted outboard seats, passengers may feel like they are compromising on legroom in the rear seats.

When it comes to entertainment tech, every model of the CX-5 comes with a 10.3-inch infotainment display that can be operated using a rotary controller, a volume knob, natural voice control, and some buttons on the steering wheel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is a standard offering, along with Mazda Connected Services, which offer access to remote vehicle functions through a smartphone app.

5. Safety

The Mazda CX-5 has received the highest safety rating (5 stars) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To make the driving experience safer, the SUV has five airbags—driver, passenger, front-head, rear-head, and front-side airbags. The SUV also comes with key safety features like integrated turn signal mirrors, traction control, blind spot monitor, auto-leveling headlights, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and cross-traffic alert. Additionally, the SUV has other standard and available driver-assistance features like brake assist, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, electronic stability control, daytime running lights, and child safety locks.

6. Warranty coverage

There are two coverage options available with the Mazda CX-5: the limited warranty, which covers three years or 36,000 miles, and the powertrain warranty, which covers five years or 60,000 miles. That said, the manufacturer does not offer complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Mazda CX-5 price list

The Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus, with a base MSRP of $36,875, and Turbo, with a base MSRP of $38,225, were all the rage in 2023 thanks to their athletic handling and sporty looks. While these trims have carried on their legacy, the Mazda CX-5 Turbo Premium has been the popular choice in 2024.

  • Select trim costs $30,720
  • Preferred trim is priced at $32,070
  • Carbon Edition costs $33,370
